Background To The Series

The inspiration for the series was a conversation in New York in 1974 between leading Brtish arts filmmaker Tony Palmer and his friend John Lennon. Lennon felt that no one had yet fully documented the history of America’s popular music on film. He suggested that Palmer should create a series of films that remedied this. Lennon also suggested the series title.

Palmer shot the films 1975-1976. The films were shown on TV through much of the world in 1977-1978. However very few US TV stations ever screened the series -- and the films have not been seen anywhere in the US since 1980 -- and have never been shown theatrically in the USA. Until now.
